Throughout the day I am suddenly connected to the internet without logging on myself. I don't have anything configured to auto connect except for Windows updates and virus protection. These are set for the middle of the night. All of these other incidents seem to happen whenever the computer wants to log on.

Perhaps your software on your computer is set to open it for help or software updates.
Check to make sure you are running IE7
