When do you think it's a good time to reformat?

I heard you should reformat your PC atleast once a year because of all the crap you've uninstalled and reinstalled and etc. Is this true? My PC is still running in tip top shape, very fast, no problems, responsive.. I only have 23 processes boot up and I keep everything tight and clean with registry cleaners, spyware/malware scans and nod32 for virus protection.

Do you think it's worth a reformat?

Honestly, what would I be benefitting from with the current condition of my machine?

(Asking now because this week, I do have the time and effort to get it done)

If your PC is not showing any signs of strange behavior and has not slowed down then it is fine and you do not have to reformat. Reformatting is really for cleaning up when all is just going to bad to be easily fixed.

Reformat? Viruses? Spyware? What are those? I use Linux.
Personally, I always reformat and reinstall my operating system. Mainly it is just to clean stuff out and have a new install.

It is not a requirement, just personal preference is all.

If your system is running great, then you don't need to do a reformat. But I would recommend backing up your system once a week in case you do have a problem.

Id personally suggest a wireless router, it'll cost about an extra $10, but it has its own firewall and works when the pc is off

I'm not sure if this is right but I think you can try getting rid of cookies. I know if you do that then your computer won't recognize previously visited sites. It's kind of like starting over. You definitely need more than me. I'm a mac person and don't have any of the problems that PC users have.

Norton is overhead heavy. McAffee is slow to update.

My computer was without any virus protection for about three weeks and no it is slower than a....well I can't think of anything...but it's slow. Last time this happened I wiped my whole hard drive and started fresh. I would like to do this again, and I am fine with reinstaling everything, just don't know how to erase the hard drive again.

go to BIOS (rapidly press delete or f10 during startup) and set your computer to boot to cd. Insert your os cd and run through the installation. at one point, you should recieve a prompt about drive partitioning. delete all partitions you see here, then create a new one, format it using NTFS (either quick or standard, you should see a prompt or the computer will do it for you) and then reinstall your os.

it could be you have a different username or password set on that if you have anyother email. you could also try to uninstall the sign in and try it again. or you could have it for messenger. for your mail problem go to options and for virus protection it could be it is blocking out your emails because it does not recognize it as safe.

What ails my computer?

I have a desktop PC running Windows XP. I have a firewall, virus protection and Spyware cleaner. Until recently the computer was working fine. For several weeks now it seems to run out of memory soon after I start using it. I am speaking here of RAM (I think that's the correct term) - - - - what the computer uses to function, not hard disc space which is fine. In order to continue using the computer I must turn it off and reboot. Then the same thing happens again after about 30 minutes or so. I empty the temporary Internet files at least once a day so that's not the problem. Any Ideas?

i think you have access to the network or someone on your household access to ur PC or maybe some programs where still running that you havent notice try press CTRL+ALT+DEL then look on application or process if there is a program u didn't know that it uses the internet like spyware. try clean this by using ur virus softwares or spyware softwares.

Not that I am picking on you..but I get so tired of people asking about LimeWire on here...it is the worst program you could ever put on yur computer. It doesn't matter if you have Fort Knox security on your computer...the viri will infect your computer. Being naive, I downloaded that program a few years ago and it cost me well over 100 bucks to clean my computer...I eventually had to get a new one. And yes, I had a well protected computer. I could not play Sims 2 at all, so I upgraded to 1 GB of RAM and had a new graphics accelerator installed. The game plays but crashes all the time. I get a VPU recover message or one that says it has crashed and the application will now terminate. If I need to update a driver, how do I do that myself and where do I go? I have tried closing background tasks and disabling virus protection, but nothing is working. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

VPU recover is a feature exclusive to ATI cards. nVidia might have something similar, I don't know, but if so it's called something different. Anyway, go to ati.amd.com and go the the 'drivers and support' section and download and install the latest drivers. If you don't know what video card you have installed, right click on the desktop, go to properties, settings, advanced, adapter.

If updating the drivers doesn't work, contact whoever installed the card and tell them your problem.

It might be that your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. Modern graphics cards are very power hungry and it's not unheard of for one to have to upgrade their power supply to upgrade their video card.

Memory - Vista needs a lot and Limewire needs a lot too. You need 2 GB for Limewire to work.

I just downloaded Limewire to my laptop with Vista and my mcafee window popped up and asked to allow or not so I allowed and everything is fine. Goodluck but watch out because Limewire is file sharing and you can get corrupt files. Open up your Mcafee in type in the Limewire http/ then click allow. Hope this helps. I hate Vista give me Xp any day.
Download U torent and go on isohunt.com from there type Limewire in. Youll be able to download Limewire Pro via U Torent it downloads really qickly too. Then you can delete U Torent if you wish coz you got Limewire.
Well I haven't actually tried installing it on vista (because it wasnt the best p2p client (has a lot of spam files)). But since it says connecting then I assume the problem is some kind of firewall, or if you have router you need to forward the ports. Vista has build in firewall that should asked you to unblock it (you can check at control panel to see unblocked applications)

The problems lies with Yahoo. Many people have this problem. I don't know why. It has nothing to do with security, since you do, eventually get the email. I switched to gmail and compared them side by side. Gmail had my mail sent from many different accounts (including hotmail accounts) almost instantly. The yahoo account did not, and sometimes took quite a while. Complain to yahoo or switch to gmail. (actually, I use .mac the most, but you have to pay for it).

My mums PC runs so slow?

My mums PC runs so slow in the POST takes 3-4 minutes to get to the xp main menu. It also takes ages loading web pages and shutting down too. We got spy ware and virus protection on it and Ive cleaned it up too.

Its only got 512MB of ram would it be a good idea to udate to 1GB would this help speed it up. Its only two years old and run quiet fast when we first got it.

im trying to set up a home network so the four computers at my house can share files and all print to one printer. We already have the wirless internet working for everyone and every computer execpt for the main station can share files. The main station is the most important since we want to be able to use the printer from our laptops but for some reason everytime i try to see the files from that computer i get an error message saying it cant communicate. My laptop is seeing that its there it just cant communicate. I can see files from my laptop from the main station computer but not the other way around. you need to set up file sharing on your pc , and also you need to ensure that all your computers are in the same workgroup. you can do this by going into control panel system, click on system and a dialogue box will come up click on the tab network identification, click on properties and go to the bottom tab and name your workgroup, youll be prompted to reboot, make sure you do this on all your pcs and stick to the same name throughout., hope that helps

oops nearly forgot to share a printer right click on the printer and click on the sharing tab, a little hand will appear on the printer once youve done this, then you need to tell your laptops that there is a shared printer on the network, you can do this by going programs\printer\add printer, were it says add network printer, click next, it will ask you for a disk so it can copy the printer drivers to the laptop, just follow the prompts, hopefully it should work, hope it does for ya

Check you dont have any passwords that are stopping you.
You may want to check the folder security on the shared folder. Make sure there is an entry for everyone, and give it full control. Also see if you can ping the main computer from the other computers. You should be able to if you can see the laptops files from the main server.

I am going to reexplaing everything here goes. On the bottom right hand corner of the screen the dispaly part not the actual screen ha ha. I have a desktop Compaq Presario S4000V that was purchased in 2003. Within the last few months, I've noticed that the modem beeps frequently during my usage of the computer. I have no idea what this could be from. I keep up-to-date anti-virus protection running, but this has not been a problem before. That beeping is your computer telling you something is wrong. If it is an overheating problem, check the fans are working and as suggested above some air to dust it out. Do it outside,( from experience ) as the dust will be un-believable.

My dad is selling his laptop and wants to remove all the files and information on it. The software is Windows Vista. There are virus protection programs on there though. As for restoring your laptop to factory defaults, if you do not have the installation disks so you can reinstall Vista, I would contact the manufacturer before making a move.

if the computer came with disks, then dont worry, all you have to do is use those cds to erase the hard drive and install a fresh set, and itll install all the software that it came with it. if it came preinstalled, then there should be a program that allows you to burn a backup set, use those. make sure you give those disk too, because some computers only let you make one copy.
The laptop should have been sold with a "restore cd" or a copy of Windows Vista itself. Get that CD out and pop it into your machine. Be sure to have your Dad back up all his important files before of course.

I have purched the Norton Internet software last year to help with blocking bad web sites as well as what other things it offers me.

When I load it in the computer to start using the product it said put in key # I did and the log in ok.

I log in and connect to the net the icon comes up that says I am connected.

It says to log in again ok. even though th icon says I am connected to the net the Security want let me even check my e-mail; I am afarid to buy the 2007 addition for fear I will be wasting my money.

My I.C.T teacher recently told us in a lesson that in a computer, there is one area that cannot be erased, and everything you do and access is there. He also said that the only way to clear this part is to completely empty and reset your computer, returning it to how it would be when bought. Is this true? If so, what is the name of this part? Can it be accessed easily? I'm going to have more virus protection updates installed by a family friend soon, and although I actually don't have anything to hide, I don't want him to be able to go through everything I've done when he feels a little bored and a quick rummage through my history takes his fancy. -.-

It can be accessed and rewrote so all information is deleted. Any .dat files can store information about where and what you do. They can be erased and then rewrote but special programs are needed. The .dat files can not be erased or deleted after Windows has accessed them. To delete or erase the information they contain you need a program that creates a .bat file to run at startup before Windows has accessed them to clean them.

One program I know of is FREE and is called Index .dat Suite. Seems to be an OK program, it can allow you to visually see what sites a person has been to even after they THINK they have deleted all the history and cookies. I use it sometimes just to help make the .dat files smaller and seems like the computer runs faster to me, probably not and just my imagination, lol.

Re-install the drivers from the CD, that should work.. If it doesn't get a copy of WinXP Manager and clean your registry (full cleaning to delete useless registry key probably left by RegCure) then try to re-install.

The above should work. If not, formatting is the only option left...

My work colleague has found her pc to be running very slow and has set it to defrag this being last night and most of today - The problem is the info bar on screen , just keeps displaying 0 % complete even though it's been hours. There has been no error messages.

Defragmentation is a slow process, but if it reads 0% after several hours then it's almost certainly crashed. You probably have a virus or registry problem. I need to format my laptop to get it to its factory settings. When i right click my C drive and select format all the right settings are there but then when i press start it says that it cannot format because i need to quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using the drive or a window that is showing the contents of the drive. If you want to format this drive nevertheless, use this way:

Put the installation CD of XP or Windows 2000 into the CD drive assembly and start the computer again. It should soon say "Press a key to start from CD".

If not, you have to change the boot sequence in the computer麓s BIOS. Another option is to use a special function key which shows a boot menu where you can chose the CD drive, if provided. The most common keys for this are [F12] and [Esc].

Go to the mcafee site and try to download some software from there because you definately have a virus...or you could back up all your info on CD's and then wipe your hard drive and reload everything.

click start, click run, type msconfig, press enter, click startup, uncheck programs you don't want starting up.

if its still not fast enough, try defragmenting your hard drive, and buying hardware like more ram.

Instead of opening explorer 7 just go to any window and type in the internet address you want and it changes to explorer 7
It might be your internet connection. When the error page shows up, click on "Check internet connection" or some kind of message like that.
more like a vista problem? did you download the right version ie vista version of IE? they have several downloads on microsoft site?
try disabling your firewall and restarting. if that doesnt work try clearing your cookies and cache. try making sure your connected to internet. if none of that works maybe try reinstalling ie7.
