There's a weird thing in my add and remove section

"VSadd-in for internet explorer"

and

"dreamweaverskin.exe."

neither of the two will let me remove them.

In my search bars on my IE pages, there's a spot where the lovely protection bar was, it won't let me remove that either.

I would recommend you doing the following things.

Windows XP if you have installed Service Pack 2 which I presume you have installed has a firewall in it, all you need to do is go into Control Panel then Security then click on the Firewall Settings and Enable it if it isn't. If a pop-up is telling you to get a firewall ignore it because it can lead to more Spyware.

It doesnt happen on google or others. When i do a search, yahoo always goes to a complete blank white screen with a "continue" button. then it always redirects me to a unrelated website. If I click the back button and reclick my website search "link"..then it's ok.. it sounds like a spyware..but i ran spyware blaster, adware and i have realtime protection with yahoo spyware. AVG Free is crap!

AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

In your mail preferences%26gt;viewing un-check the box that says "Display Remote Images in HTML messages." That will help against steganography (hiding a virus in a pic).

In System Preferences, un-check everything in your "Sharing" tab. Turn on your built-in firewall. Turn off internet sharing.

Also set a password for yourself as the System Administrator.

You don't need anything else.

It was installed by a Trojan. It is installed by a Smitfraud Trojan. Smitfrauds cannot be removed by normal AV and AS programs. It must be removed by programs designed to remove it. These two sites have free program and procedures to remove the Smitfraud.

Oh, what a mess! I would encourage that you make the switch to Linux. Linux is a different operating system, that is built better than Microsoft Windows and cannot get infected with viruses or malware. The best thing is that it's totally free of cost. I would suggest that you get Ubuntu, the distribution that I believe to be the simplest and easiest.

It sounds like you have downloaded a rogue malware program. It will take a specialized program to remove this infection.

Simply uninstalling the program will probably still leave the computer infected.

It's a bootable CD image that you'll need to burn to a CD, then you'll need to back your data up, boot from the CD, click on the install icon and follow the instructions in the wizard that appears. Those two programs run all the time my pc is on.

I also have: Spybot Search %26 Destroy (FREE); AdAware SE Pro (FREE)

I run these two programs at least once a week or if I've done a lot of surfing. The only thing I don't like about Spybot and AdAware is that you have to launch them manually. It would be nice if they ran all the time.

AVG free will not install to a sever. It is for personal use only. I know because I tried to install it to Windows NT4 Small Business Server, and Windows 2000 Advanced Server. I use AVG File Server Edition. It comes with one server and 4 workstation license. That allowed me to protect 5 of my thirteen computers with he more advanced paid version. Will worth it in my opinion.

click and look for any reference to ad-aware ( I believe the Parent name is Lavasoft) and delete it reboot then Mcafee should be good to go

You have to check to really make sure that it is a true phishing dite. I have noticed that Microsoft gives false phishing dite error messages. When a site is linked to other site that requires users to put in their information to register to buy or use a product. Microsoft application tends to believe that it is a website pretending to be another website. What you need to do is to contact that website admin or support to alert them of the warning so they can report that to microsoft.

Get f-secure firewall and anti-virus. You can get a free trial for 3 weeks. The firewall will tell you about any program connecting to the internet that isn't usual. Like I stop it connecting media player on my desktop. I use the Windows firewall on my laptop - that stops some things coming in but not connections out. So MSN know all my playlists and what music I listen to. So a firewall will protect you against malware, viruses, worms, trojans, etc. the anti virus will scan all emails and everything else coming in for viruses and malware. You can schedule it to scan once a week and do a full system scan at a time when you aren't using the computer or even if you are using it! It does it better if you aren't using it. I also do an occasional scan with Ccleaner - that removes cookies, temporary files and other crap. F-secure also do an online scan - when a virus stopped my anti-virus program working - the online scan found it and deleted it. The program isn't the cheapest - it comes from Finland. If you happen to bank with Barclays give them a ring. I got a discount on the firewall and antivirus for my desktop and a licence for the antivirus for my laptop free for 2 years. I think that offer is still on for people who do online banking.

This is a very nasty spyware. And even though is is a spyware it mask itself as a virus. This is why very few programs can remove it.

I have ran into this one 8 times in the last 4 months. And all had some form of anti spyware running.

I had my period last week, lasted approx. 3-4 days, but was mostly normal, then I had some brown discharge for 2 more days (very light) I felt like this was pretty normal for me. Therefore, if you have a heavy, normal period, you not pregnant.

Or get any other brand you want go to the site www.google.com and type free antivirus software. A lot of options should come up. Install one of those and hopefully this virus will be deleted. But it is never wise to surf the net without an anti-virus.so don't do it.

You should try eScan Internet Security Suite from MicroWorld as it uses the least resources. It uses a technology called MWL developed by them that scans the files before they are saved on your computer. Therefore when you open the file in any application it does not use any resources as the file has already being scanned. I am very satisfied with this product and use it both on my laptop and desktop at home.
AVG and Avast are the best know free virus programs.

yes you are very much at risk, people often do this and they don't know that much about there computer. Anything you delete is still in your system registry a place where you never want to mess around in unless you know what your doing, go to the McAfee website and look up virus removal tools, they should instruct you how to remove it in every area.
Chances are your good if you did a system scan and McAfee didn't report any problems. Try downloading S%26D spybot, its an excellent program for getting rid of nasty pop up boxes.

Make sure you updated your virus definitions before you did the scan, though. If not, update McAfee, then scan again.

Keep Spysweeper! Spyware/Adware is much more prevalent than true "viruses" and Spysweeper is a very good program. Forget about Adaware as mentioned by another person (it's crap), Spysweeper is much better. Yes, they are resource hogs unfortunately (especially Norton), but you paid for them so you might as well keep 'em. I would suggest a secondary spyware scanner as a backup. Try SuperAntispyware Free Edition. It is an on-demand scanner so you won't have to worry about it hogging any resources when you are not scanning. Trust me, I do this for a living!

I have managed to get a worm that causes my computer to restart randomly. I have two different virus protections installed neither of which can find the bug. I have tried doing verious online scans(housecall, panda) but neither ever complete working. Better than Ad Aware 2007 SE? What do you recomend and why?

I was using Ad Aware as a tool for tracking cookies removal and such at both home and all the office computers. It seems its been well over 100 days since there has been an update available for ad aware and to the best of my knowledge there isnt going to be one, so, I must be moving on.

At work we have a serious set up of firewalls that I cannot compromise.

So, Whats good? I am now using a bunch of things Microsoft Malware Scanner, CCleaner, AND Windows Defender.

I dont want to install the CCleaner on all of our computers because it wipes out our saved settings each time and that bugs me, I can just use the Internet Explorer tool to remove temp files and cookies gently so it doesnt wipe out all our data.

Anyhow, what is ewido? Any good? Do you see a reason I should keep CCleaner when I can clean my registiries myself, I need something for the tracking cookies, adware, malware, without compromising my current virus protections?

I used to run an bunch of freeware anti-spyware protection, caus I had heard that a combination of free anti-spyware could get you the same protection as a good paid one. But since I dumped IE6 and switched to Opera I haven't caught anything nasty, besides a few harmless tracking-cookies.

For me ad aware went downhill after the 2007 version came in because it frequently crashed while downloading updates that were manually selected so I got rid of it.

I don't know if it's true but someone told me it is constantly in update mode in the background downloads updates automatically and in fact needs no manual updating.

Anyway right now I rely on spyware terminator (has real time protection unlike ad aware free version) and spyware doctor which is not free. Spybot and super antispyware are also generally highly valued.

True also Opera and Firefox are way more secure than IE when it comes to spyware though not 100% immune to it.

You might have left your firefox browser open. Multiple browsers often cause problems. Just in case you want to switch browsers, click work offline first, then close all programs.......before opening your back-up browser. Different browsers require different java and adobe requirements......downloading both requirements for java and adobe could really cramp your space......it also causes enormous conflict.!!!!! I strongly suggest that you assign a specific browser for mere surfing purposes only...assign the other for playing games...for video streams... I am in need of a laptop but not very sure where to start. It needs to be easy to use and have easy clean up/virus protection. I do not really play games or watch movies on a computer. I do however do graphic design so a fast precessor would be a need. Weight can't be too heavy. It needs to be one that will last for a while once i am finished with school, so durability and longevity need to match up with the price. In my eyes, what is the point of buying a 500 laptop that is only good for a year or two then starts going down the drain? Websites are more than welcome. The easier to use the better.

I would go with a Mac, for a few reasons. You say you do graphic design, and Mac computers are pretty much made for graphic design/photography, and things like that. personally, i did not have a very good experience with norton. but since you already have it you might as well stick with it until it expires. but for now, download a non-norton free trial of antivirus/antispyware program from somewhere like www.trendmicro.com or www.download.com. however, the problem is that norton might not let you download any type of antivirus/antispyware programs while it's still on your system.

The hacker can then use this data to get things like your MySpace password yes. I suggest updating your Anti-Virus and then doing a full system scan. If that does not find it i suggest trying AVG Anti-Spyware Free or/and AVG Anti-Virus Free. Update them and do a full system scan. If a key logger is not the case. Then yes you probably are being phished but you just don't know it, as is the idea with phishing.

If you plan to go to Best Buy to buy a notebook, the only thing you need to look for is the hardware - don't worry about the bundled software because most of it is useless and should be removed anyway. This is true for any OEM system, not just those from Best Buy.

If you decide to get Geek Squad to help you set it up, there's a good chance that they will con you into spending more money than you need. The setup process - especially for a notebook computer - is fairly straightforward. Turn it on, enter some info, wait for it to boot initially, and done.

As far as specs to look for, it depends on what your parents plan to do with the computer. I highly doubt it will be anything TOO intensive because if so, you'd be getting them a desktop anyway.

If available, budget processors like a Celeron D or Sempron should be fine. For web surfing, word processing and whatnot, 512MB of RAM normally would be fine as long as the OS is Vista Basic. There are not going to be any XP notebook systems available. If the OS is Home Premium or Ultimate (I doubt they'd have Business) - then make sure it has at LEAST 1GB of RAM - which is ridiculous, but necessary.

Most will cost you after a trial verson but you can try a few and find which one is best for you. If you get an antivirus program it will find most if not all viruses. I also recommend you get a spyware/adware remover too. The site I gave you above has tons that are free and you dont have to buy them

2) I'm not a legal expert but I think as long as you bought the program you can put in on any of your own computers but I would check the licensing to make sure. And yes if you use a friends it is suppose to be illegal *wink*.

There are two most common causes of slowness.

1. Too many programs running in the background (take a look at running processes by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL all at the same time). Ideally, you want to be as low as possible (mine is around 40) while still running essential software such as your antivirus.

2. Not enough RAM. Windows XP needs a minimum of 512MB %26 Windows Vista needs a minimum of 1GB to run efficiently and not drive you crazy with the slowness.

Related to #1 above, you might have a SPYWARE infection that your antivirus program is not catching. Try downloading %26 installing a trial version of Webroot Spy Sweeper ( http://www.webroot.com ) %26 see if that picks up anything.

In addition to running a disk defragment program, getting rid of spy-ware, adding RAM, and deleting unused files, there are some other "tricks" to speed things up. AVG is the best free virus protection out there guranteed it will scan ur computer find the files that have the virus EVEN FIX THEM FOR YOU or if their unfixable they'll have it deleted and and make sure its 100% impossible for it to ever come back. Why is my burner burning so slow?

I just switched from a 8x speed burner to a 32x speed burner. When burning a dvd, the encoding part takes about the same amount of time (1-2 hours). When I put the video image on a blank dvd, the 8x burner takes about 20 minutes. But the problem is that the 32x burner takes up to 6 hours and cannot understand why. I am using the right blank dvd's (for the 8x burner i used Verbatim 1x-8x dvd+r and for the 32x burner i use Sony 1x-16x dvd+r). I had someone install this for me but cannot give me a legit answer of what's going on. I want to know how to speed up the burning. I am ok with the encoding part. I am still using the same software roxio and dvd shrink and it should not be the problem because i used it before eventhough nero was recently installed. I also had my virus protection on but i did it before with 8x speed burner. When I burn a dvd i set the speed to 16x to match the speed of my blank dvd.

I have to agree with the previous poster, I don't think there are any 32x DVD burners. I have a 16x burner, and it performs at about 8-10x. Try updating the firmware on your burner. You can usually do this by going to the manufacturers website and download an .exe file that will update it for you.

We have 3 computers on a home network w/both Win98 (for older games) and XP. Any insight or current experience with tools that might be helpful? The main concerns would be things like some particular "YouTube" videos, more obscure kid-centric websites (that may link to 'others' or download spyware or adware+) and what IM 'chats' are happening (email? - password protected websites like or "MySpaces"?).

Price is important and I do already run basic "Norton SystemWorks" virus protection - but does not need to be "freeware".

Best is kid education. But they or their friends will always be curious about the forbidden. You can put a few blocks in a netgear or similar wireless router. You can also set the router to send you a report of all websites visited by EVERYONE on your network in it's config. But youtube is so hard with kids - the comments are full of swearing even if the video is innocent. I don't know about the software you mentioned but there is also key capture devices for you to monitor all typing. Pretty big brother-ish but depends on how worried you are about kids. Keeping the computer in the family room was recommended to me by a police detective. Good luck.

Yes, you have virus protection but how up to date is it? You should check that, if the definitions are more than a week or two old that might be your problem.

Also, do you have spyware protection and a firewall? Look in to all that. Make sure you have all the MS Windows security updates installed and that your browser is updated as well.

i have had a similar problem. a recurring name that refuses to be deleted and returns each time I sign on. The name also multiples itself in the address book. Either reformat and reinstall or take your computer to a repair service that does spyware and virus removal. The automatic spyware removal tools often leave stuff behind to reinstall the junk. More experienced people who remove this stuff for a living can easily remove the stuff using a number of tools.

In the future you should look at installing Returnil. It is free for personal use. The program erases all changes to a computer when you shut off the computer. It is the only way to make certain you won't get anything. It is a preventative tool, it won't solve your current problem, but would stop any infections in the future after you get rid of this problem.

It all depends on the intended useage. Thats like asking "whats the best kind of car?", it's personal preference (and to some extent advertising). I have been building and reselling computers for a very long time. Of all the manufacturers I have resold for, the best company I dealt with was Acer. They have a pretty wide range of computers and pricing, and you can still get them with Windows XP Professional. As far as a low to mid priced PC goes, that's where I would look.

If you're looking for something that will be upgradeable for the future (which most cheap PC's aren't), look into having a computer custom built.

Most OEM (HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway) computers don't come will full versions of software, you have to pay for it (extra). Don't bother getting Norton or McAfee for an antivirus, they both perform horribly and slow computers down. AVG Internet Security works VERY well, and cost half what Norton costs. Well worth the money.

For a new PC, look for Windows XP, 2GB Ram, a DVD+/-RW drive, at least 250MB hard drive. If you're looking for a complete system, get at least a 19" LCD. As for processor, if you're looking to save some money, go with an AMD Dual Core X2 5000 or better, otherwise an Intel dual core 2Ghz or better should suffice for most day to day tasks.

Try using System Restore. Go to Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt;Accessories%26gt;System Tools%26gt;System Restore. Restore the system back to a point before your installation. Bear in mind that any programmes you've installed since the date you restore to will be lost.

Before then, be sure to have tried using Control Panel%26gt;Add/Remove Programs.

There it will be scanned with 24 Antivirus programs, but you can only send upto 10MB

If the results say that there is no virus... send it to Symantec and tell them that your program detects this as a false positive!!! They will update their database after checking that it isn't a new virus!!
