Basically everytime i go to switch it on (also when it goes to sleep) it NEVER seems to come on until i try like 50 times not exaggerating its sad but i counted, anyway when i switch it on the fan starts as normal but the screen has all weird lines on it the most freqeuent is a blue bit in the bottomleft corner and another is a grey screen with black bars across the top or just plain white, my firewall is broken im waiting for a new one and i know i should but i dont have virus protection at the minute. Don't panic- calm down. This sort of thing happens with older laptops. It may be a LCD problem, a fried chip from a power surge or a loose hinge on the display. Don't repeatedly press the power button- that is bad for the laptop. You could potentially stuff up the motherboard or hard drive and once that is done there's no fixing it.

Find a desktop PC, (or this one you are working on right now) and unplug the monitor from the main unit and plug it into your laptop. there are two cables from the monitor- one is a VGA port with multiple pins on the end- goes into the laptop. The other is your standard power cable.

Sounds like everything you described were software issues and had nothing to do with the laptop hardware. Sounds like the laptop just wasn't configured correctly. Personallly I dislike Compaq/HP, but thats for entirely different reasons than you mentioned.

My McAfee Virusscan has found a number of viruses, worms, and trojans that it can't quarantine or "clean". It's a new computer that has all kinds of firewalls and protections up (all continually updated) so how can I fix this mess? I tried the McAfee help sections and CNET and got no help that I can understand. Any ideas (outside of throwing my puter from a tall building) would be much appreciated.

I understand your concern and your problem. I am a computer technician so I deal with these problems all the time.

Chances are, McAfee can't remove the viruses for two reasons. First, the viruses may be currently running in memory. It cannot delete files that are running in memory. Second, McAfee is probably the worst antivirus protection you can buy. Sorry to tell you that, but it's true. I recommend Symantec (http://www.symentec.com/) or NOD32 (http://nod32.com and this is the best in the industry).

One method of removing the viruses is to start the computer in SAFE Mode. To do this, restart the computer. As soon as the computer starts to boot (i.e. you see a logo screen) press the F8 key repeatedly. Then run your virus scan and see what happens. In SAFE mode, not everything loads, so you should be able to delete some (if not all) of the viruses.

i have been getting alot of viruses and they shutdown all these programs

For a hacker to get someone's password, does the computer user have to first either get a virus and/or let a hacker get past the firewall, and after all that, does the hacker then have to figure out the password?

I'm just trying to figure out if a hacker can take control over passwords by simply figuring them out, or does the computer user first have to get a virus and/or let someone get past the firewall.

Trojan Horse. When you get a trojan horse, some collect all inputted data then it will be saved in a file, then sent to the creator. He will then have all your passwords. Can anyone help or make reccommend suggestions about anti-virus software or spyware, etc. (I know very little about technology!) I know I had the AVG free trial but it expired. I don't necessarily mind paying for a service, as long as it is reputable.

I currently have some kind of bug, trojan, or virus (just throwing words out there!) that prohibits me from using search engines online. Whenever I click on a link that comes up as a result, I am automatically transferred to another "phishy" looking search site or ebay site.

but u know what.. the best way to get rid of viruses is to format your hard drive. then install the windows and all the stuff again and an anti-virus software to prevent from getting viruses in the future. coz what i know that when u get a virus and it messes up your computer, some of it stays there, or it goes away with an anti-virus but its effect stays. with formatting u get a clean new computer.
I use NOD32 as antivirus, AVG Antispyware and ZoneAlarm as firewall. I fully recommend them all, but there must be other good programs.

This is what I have installed right now and it keeps finding infected files and deleting them, but I wonder if another program would find the heart of the problem so these files would stop getting infected in the first place. Scan again and try and remove in safe mode.

In general, Windows does not allow the deletion of files when they are in use. However, Safe Mode will only load a minimum amount of drivers and services to run Windows, making removal a better bet. Scan again and attempt to delete while your computer is in safe mode.

To access Safe Mode, reboot then repeatedly press the F8 key at the first screen. When finished removing that pest, reboot again to return to normal mode.

You can get rid of it yourself. It places it in there so you can make the decision. From the quarantine there are help links to answer questions. Open Norton Security and in the left column go to view history. Where it says recent history use the arrow and select quarantine. In the upper right select Help and then scroll down to managing quarantine. After reading that, on the bottom select Removing an item from quarantine. Now you are all read up on it and you can contact them for further questions.

How do you turn off the write protection in windows XP Home?

I can see why some people didn't like windows XP home, the whole "documents and settings" directory is write protected.

Recently, a virus got past my firewall and manifested itself in the (my account name)\local settings directory. My anti-virus program finds the virus every time I connect to the net but can't delete or quarantine it because the directory is write protected.

I have tried starting in safe mode and setting all the permissions for "all users" to checked, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

When the folder's properties are open the read-only box is filled with a translucent square instead of a check mark.

My anti virus program is McAfee.

Could someone help me out?

I don't think the dirctory is write-protected. The file is currently in use. Run the computer in safemode. Backup the registry and then search it for any keys with the name of the file that McAffee Identified. Delete these keys. What is the name of the file? That information could help me alot in answering this question. It could be the virus that is making the whole directory write protected. Try deleting the file in safemode. If it won't let you make sure it is not running.

For a firewall look at Comodo or Zone Alarm. Both are free and better than Windows firewall. One other option is to place a router between your internet connection and your computer. Even if you do not have a home network, the router offers a hardware firewall.

Spam filter can be turned on with your email provider or on your client. Both Outlook and Thunderbird have provisions for this.

As for Anti-Spyware, AVG has a free version. There is also Spybot and Windows defender. Windows defender is actually a pretty decent program on a clean system. that is the catch.

I like AVG Free for anti-virus needs. There are others like Avast.

MS has a malicious software removal tool. Search the MS site for it though chances are that if you have automatic updates on you already have it.

AVG AV is a very poor AV its detection rate is only 82% - with this poor detection rate I just would not use AVG - Avast %26 Avira are both free %26 have a far better detection rate.

Don't run two AV's it will lock up your PC, you can do a free online scan to see if AVG is missing Viruses - try bitdefender free online scan or trend housecall.

Firewall is most important. Zone Alarm free version does the job. I think Windows firewall only guards against stuff coming in, not stuff being sent from your pc, so get Zone Alarm. I'd get one more anti-spyware as well, say AVG or superantispyware.

You can download free antivirus, like Avast. If you have Windows, it comes with firewall protection of some kind. Check the control panel and "security" settings, maybe the switch is turned off.

If you are looking for the best possible protection my top recommendation is Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic [1]. Although its detection rate is outstanding there are some reservations. First it lacks email scanning; this is only available in the paid version. That means that AntiVir won't warn you about any infected emails before you open them. However should you open an infected email then AntiVir will still spring into action, so not having an email scanner doesn't mean you are not protected from email based infections. My second reservation is that AntiVir is quite an intrusive product - you will certainly be well aware of its presence. Finally AntiVir Personal Edition Classic has a time limited license. It is renewable but be aware you will have to periodically go through the hoops.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. Maybe the fan is going bad or the power supply is going bad. Call Dell if it is under warranty. If not you will have to do it yourself.

Norton Internet Security already has the antivirus scanner--you should uninstall Avast since it may came into conflict with Norton. You can also add A-Squared Free, SpywareBlaster and SuperAntiSpyware to your list. Norton also already has the software firewall, so you're OK there. If you also connect to the internet through a Router, you also already has a hardware firewall too. You're OK on security although if you can i would ditch Norton Security and use ZoneAlarm Security Suite instead, it's a much much better security suite. The suite has the top notch ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, Kaspersky antivirus along with ZoneLabs antispyware.

Open the Registry Editor.

Expand the following registry key:

Okay, then you've been infested with mal-ware or spy ware. Look up other answers and find one that identifies free spyware software and use that to scan and clean your computer.
your hard drive is low on free space. all you need to do is go to the control panel and then add or remove programs. then remove anything you don't need. you can check how much room is on you hard drive by right clicking on start, selecting explore, then when the page opens, right click on c: or your primary (first) hard drive under my computer and selecting properties. if all else ails, transfer all files to a external disk, then get a larger hard drive from bestbuy or officemax or staples and reinstall an operating system (bestbuys geek squad can help) and then putting the backed up files onto the new drive. if all else fails, buy a new computer and get new stuff

First off, you might have too many things starting up and staying resident when you start your computer. Of course, there are other things that could be causing this, including a corrupt registry, or fragmented disk. A good program I use is available for a 30 day free trial. Personally I hate Mcafee as I find it very annoying to use, slows down my computer, and I don't think it actually works all that well. I would just get rid of it and try something else. You usually can't run 2 anti virus programs at the same time, as they will conflict with each other. This will cause them both to not work and will usually crash your computer.

As an independent IT Technician I am constantly asked about Anti-virus software and which one's the best. My answer is always the same: none of them so go with any that's free. No one in the industry can give you any supported data as to who is the best. They all claim to be but cannot support the argument with clear evidence to back up their claim. Probably because they'd get sued and people tend to believe what they want to believe. Norton and Mcafee are the big boys but isn't that because they are in with the big suppliers to get their product pre-installed on these pc's.

First of all condoms don't offer effective protection against viral infections (genital herpes, HPV, molluscum etc). If he has an outbreak he should definitely not have any type of intercourse as genital herpes is an extremely contagious disease. There's also a chance of passing the STI even if there are no signs of an outbreak. If I were you, I'd take no chances unless I'd see a serious/committed relation.

I had a discussion with a friend of mine which is a doctor and in the practice she said she had a patient that had a very weak immune system because of cancer treatment. His wife had genital herpes which would have been a disaster to catch. They kept it under control with daily valtrex or other type of medication. If you really love this guy go for it, but at least go to a doctor to minimize the chances of getting it yourself.

Avast, Avg, and clamwin are most known. Don't forget spyware protection though. Very important these days. Best freeware program for that is Spybot Search and Destroy. Microsoft also offers a free anti spyware program called Windows Defender.

They're many free Aunti Virus protections, but those are not protective compared to the costly ones. You will still get viruses and spyware with these free programs. Some people say Free Anti Virus protections are as great as the costly ones, which is totally wrong. McAfee has found more than 90 viruses on my computer when I used to use the free ones, which never detected the viruses.

I would say pay for McAfee. Norton is terrible in my opinion.

One of the first things to do when you suspect malware is DISABLE System Restore.

If enabled, this allows malware to hide in the computer and re-install itself.

While it's great that those sites make a really great effort to stop any malware from getting to your computer, I believe it's best to implement antivirus protection at the PC also. It certainly can't hurt.

I would recommend you doing the following things.

Windows XP if you have installed Service Pack 2 which I presume you have installed has a firewall in it, all you need to do is go into Control Panel then Security then click on the Firewall Settings and Enable it if it isn't. If a pop-up is telling you to get a firewall ignore it because it can lead to more Spyware.

It doesnt happen on google or others. When i do a search, yahoo always goes to a complete blank white screen with a "continue" button. then it always redirects me to a unrelated website. AVG Free is crap!

AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

I don't know anyone who uses an anti-virus for a Mac. I don't, and I've got four Macs at home.

In your mail preferences%26gt;viewing un-check the box that says "Display Remote Images in HTML messages." That will help against steganography (hiding a virus in a pic).

In System Preferences, un-check everything in your "Sharing" tab. Turn on your built-in firewall. Turn off internet sharing.

Also set a password for yourself as the System Administrator.

You don't need anything else.

It was installed by a Trojan. It is installed by a Smitfraud Trojan. Smitfrauds cannot be removed by normal AV and AS programs. It must be removed by programs designed to remove it. These two sites have free program and procedures to remove the Smitfraud.

Oh, what a mess! I would encourage that you make the switch to Linux. Linux is a different operating system, that is built better than Microsoft Windows and cannot get infected with viruses or malware. The best thing is that it's totally free of cost. It sounds like you have downloaded a rogue malware program. It will take a specialized program to remove this infection.

It's a bootable CD image that you'll need to burn to a CD, then you'll need to back your data up, boot from the CD, click on the install icon and follow the instructions in the wizard that appears. I have: AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free edition %26 Spy Sweeper

Those two programs run all the time my pc is on.

I also have: Spybot Search %26 Destroy (FREE); AdAware SE Pro (FREE)

I run these two programs at least once a week or if I've done a lot of surfing. The only thing I don't like about Spybot and AdAware is that you have to launch them manually. It would be nice if they ran all the time.

AVG free will not install to a sever. It is for personal use only. I know because I tried to install it to Windows NT4 Small Business Server, and Windows 2000 Advanced Server. I use AVG File Server Edition. It comes with one server and 4 workstation license. That allowed me to protect 5 of my thirteen computers with he more advanced paid version. Will worth it in my opinion.

click and look for any reference to ad-aware ( I believe the Parent name is Lavasoft) and delete it reboot then Mcafee should be good to go

You have to check to really make sure that it is a true phishing dite. I have noticed that Microsoft gives false phishing dite error messages. When a site is linked to other site that requires users to put in their information to register to buy or use a product. Microsoft application tends to believe that it is a website pretending to be another website. What you need to do is to contact that website admin or support to alert them of the warning so they can report that to microsoft.

Get f-secure firewall and anti-virus. You can get a free trial for 3 weeks. The firewall will tell you about any program connecting to the internet that isn't usual. Like I stop it connecting media player on my desktop. I use the Windows firewall on my laptop - that stops some things coming in but not connections out. So MSN know all my playlists and what music I listen to. So a firewall will protect you against malware, viruses, worms, trojans, etc. the anti virus will scan all emails and everything else coming in for viruses and malware. You can schedule it to scan once a week and do a full system scan at a time when you aren't using the computer or even if you are using it! It does it better if you aren't using it. I also do an occasional scan with Ccleaner - that removes cookies, temporary files and other crap. F-secure also do an online scan - when a virus stopped my anti-virus program working - the online scan found it and deleted it. The program isn't the cheapest - it comes from Finland. If you happen to bank with Barclays give them a ring. I got a discount on the firewall and antivirus for my desktop and a licence for the antivirus for my laptop free for 2 years. I think that offer is still on for people who do online banking.
