My mums PC runs so slow?

My mums PC runs so slow in the POST takes 3-4 minutes to get to the xp main menu. It also takes ages loading web pages and shutting down too. We got spy ware and virus protection on it and Ive cleaned it up too.

Its only got 512MB of ram would it be a good idea to udate to 1GB would this help speed it up. Its only two years old and run quiet fast when we first got it.

Any help would be great thanks.

The speed of computers depend on several things.

1. Check the hard disk ... Go to My Computer %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Right click on C: %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Properties %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Disk Cleanup (to remove useless files) ... Again from Properties %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Tools %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Check Now %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Tick on ( Automatically fix file system errors %26 Scan for attempt recovery of bad sectors) %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Start %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; The computer will schedule the scan to the next start up, so restart the computer ;) ..... After finishing the scan go again to C: %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Properties %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Tools %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Defragment Now %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; a new window will appear , click on Defragment button ...

By the way make sure that the hard disk isn't full. If it's , try to move some personal files to another place such as D: or burn them on CDs , try to remove useless programs, Start %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Control Panel %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Add or Remove Programs ...
