I keep seeing all the news about this new vaccine and they always talk about women up until age 26. Does anyone know why?? I would think we would want every woman to have it. I'm married and have been with my honey for 12 years. But you never know. . .I may be a freewheeling single again someday and need the protection?
Why is the vaccine for the HPV virus (causes cervical cancer) only for women up to age 26? Why not all women?microsoft
They are trying to reach young girls before they have sex and are exposed to HPV. That's why they only tested young women during the trial studies (they have a better chance of not being exposed to the virus compared to - say a 40 year old). Women over 26 can still get the vaccine, but chances of them already being exposed to the virus is greater.
Talk to your doctor about it. I'm sure they would be glad to give you the vaccine if you ask them.
Good luck!

Gardasil has only been tested on females from 9-26, that's why it's only approved for that age range. GlaxoSmithKline is currently in the last testing phase for another vaccine (Cervarix) that has been tested on woman above the age of 25 (it's actually been tested for ages 15-55).
The vaccine has been widely tested in 9-to-26 year-old girls/women. But research on the vaccine鈥檚 safety and efficacy has only recently begun with women older than 26 years of age. The FDA will consider licensing the vaccine for these women when there is research to show that it is safe and effective for them.
